*A conversation with Nilda Mesa, Columbia University Assistant Vice President of Environmental Stewardship, http://www.environment.columbia.edu/, and Jeremy Friedman, Project Administrator, NYU Sustainability Task Force, www.nyu.edu/sustainability

"Sustainability" has become such an overused buzzword that it is in danger of becoming the new "Atkins Diet". Every company, organization, and individual wants to "be sustainable," but no one wants to be inconvenienced beyond their normal routine or be forced to pay for it. While sustainability jobs are created daily, defining it is difficult and working at it is even more complex. Learn how Nilda and Jeremy have navigated the changing field and helped Columbia University and NYU carve niches (and become leaders) in this burgeoning field.

Nilda joined Columbia as a seasoned environmentalist, having championed environmental justice policy as a Clinton-Gore appointee for the NAFTA environmental side agreements, the US Air Force, and the White House Council for Environmental Quality. Jeremy is a rising environmental leader who co-founded the Green Arch Initiative while a student at NYU. He advocated for the administration to "go green," and was subsequently hired in the newly created department to carry out this monumental task. Although they approach the field from different perspectives, Nilda and Jeremy share much in common with each other and those of us interested in carrying out "sustainability" work upon graduation from SIPA. Come join in the conversation and be inspired!

Pizza will be served.

**Curriculum Recommendation Committee (First Meeting)

The ESP Student Government is soliciting recommendations from the class to improve the rest of our Columbia experience (suggestions for the spring semester).
The meeting will last no longer than one-hour and will be moderated by Diane Foy. A strict timetable and outline of topics will be followed. In preparation, those interested in participating should compile a list of constructive suggestions for the spring semester. Another email will follow shortly with additional meeting logistics and an outline of discussion topics.

Environmental Tips for the Upcoming Holiday Season

http://www.newdream.org/holiday/tips.php

All,

Now that it's practically November, it's time to start thinking about the holidays. EPA estimates approximately 25% of annual MSW is generated between Thanksgiving and New Years. I thought you might like to go to the above link for lots of ideas to reduce waste this holiday season. One of my coworkers did a lot of research previously for the NJDEP version of a Green Holiday Guide. A lot of her tips have been incorporated into this this.

Enjoy!

Equitable Solutions of the Carbon and Climate Problem

On Tuesday, September 30, 2008 from 6:00-7:30 PM, renowned Princeton biologist Steve Pacala will be speaking on "Equitable Solutions of the Carbon and Climate Problem" in the Barash Theater located on the first floor of the NYU Jeffrey S. Gould Welcome Center (50 West Fourth Street, at the corner of Washington Square East). More information about the lecture can be found below.

To RSVP, please visit http://www.nyu.edu/rsvp/event.php?e_id=1050.

New evidence suggests that the climate change problem is more urgent and serious than the conclusions of the latest IPCC report. After a quick review of the science of global warming and some of the most serious impacts, I will summarize three recent findings, all of which will increase the expected severity of climate change. I will then discuss the mix of existing technology and revolutionary advances that will be needed to solve the problem, and provide a scientific and technical evaluation of pending legislation and the platforms of the presidential candidates. Finally, I will turn to the issue that is now dominating discussion of an international deal on climate. What is a fair way to partition the effort among the rich and poor? I first use a statistical method to estimate personal emissions of every individual on Earth, and then discuss the distribution of emissions among nations and individuals in light of alternative concepts of fairness.

Welcome!

Dear MPA-ESP'09,

Welcome to our class blog!

This multipurpose site is created to serve as a bulletin board for latest class events, an interactive forum to share interesting thoughts and articles, and a "sustainable" way to keep in touch.

The MPA-ESP Government is seeking guest speakers and planning events based on your interests and requests. Individual speaker series, panels nights featuring environmental professionals, and career events will be held in the future. Please look out for the weekly email newsletter, "This Week in ESP..." for regular updates of our event schedule! Instead of flooding your email accounts, your Student Government will communicate with the class here from now on. I strongly encourage you to check this blog regularly for information.

Lastly, please take advantage of the blog features. Feel free to correct any errors in updates and also comment on our fellow classmates' blog entries. Of course, courtesy and respect in the use of language is always appreciated.

Blog away!

Yours,
Ellie
